Painting in the grounds of the Quaker Centre and surrounding locations. Glenthorne Quaker Centre and guest house is two minutes’ walk from Grasmere town center and surrounded by stunning scenery. Grasmere offers many attractions including Dove Cottage, Red Bank and Rydal Mount, all associated with the poet, William Wordsworth. All these are open to the public. An ideal base for walking and seeing the northern lakes.

Students are responsible for bringing their own equipment, however if you are travelling via public transport and can’t manage boards or easels, please let me know?  I have extra boards etc. and watercolour paper and pastel papers to buy.

The course will include compositional sketches in various media, composition and development into paintings. Daily demonstrations and individual tuition. The old studio will be converted into ensuite disabled units.

No strenuous walking involved, however some walking around the grounds and locations are kept to a minimum, there’s plenty to see and paint! To book please contact Glenthorne on 015394 35389

Mixed media residential break with Professional Artist/Tutor Sue Ford

Please arrive at Glenthorne on Monday, after 2 pm and on weekend courses after 2 pm on Fridays

On arrival, please take your equipment to the studio.

During the course we will be sketching exciting nearby locations and, in the studio, (weather dependent)

This course is a superb opportunity for all artists of different levels and ability.

In pastel, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media techniques.

General art materials recommended

Table easel or floor standing easel (not essential)

Drawing board – thin plywood or MDF are fairly lightweight (big enough for your paper size).

Masking tape, kitchen towels, a 2b pencil, putty rubber. A bottle of coloured masking fluid and a mixing palette

Suggestion for a basic watercolour palette,

1. Ultramarine Blue           4 Permanent Rose.                         7. Lemon Yellow

2. Cobalt blue                    5 Cadmium Yellow                        8 Yellow ochra

3. Cerulean Blue                6 Cadmium Red                             9 Cobalt violet

(One of my favorites)

For Acrylic I use the same colours with the addition of Naples Yellow, Turquoise,

Opera Rose and a large tub of white.

Suggested manufacturers – Winsor & Newton, Daler Rowney and White Knights.

Available in tubes, half pans and full pans (I prefer full pans) and acrylics in tubes or tubs.

Pastels, a selection of hard and soft pastels, I use Unison and Sennelier and Inscribe

(Hard Pastels),

Student colours are produced with packing called Hues of the colour and reasonable in price

Artist quality are the best with pure pigments, but they are more expensive – graded in series numbers 1-4 shows the purity of the colour. Prices vary, series 1 approximately £3.99 to series 4 at £8.99.

Brushes

I recommend synthetic brushes, Gold and Di Vinci or any good manufacturer of brushes

Sizes – Large No 12 rounds, No 8 round and rigger brush no 3.

Paper, I prefer Bockingford, Arches and Saunders Waterford papers in 300lb (600 gms).  Or/200 lb (420gms) in rough or Not surface. These weights avoid stretching.

These papers can be bought from Sue at £1.80 Quarter Imperial Sanders Waterford, 300lbs (600gms and Bockingford 250lbs (450gms) £1 Quarter imperial. These heavy weight papers, avoid the need for stretching.

Most art shops stock 140lb (300gms) papers. 140lb paper requires stretching, 140lb blocks are OK, where the pad’s edges are glued – saves stretching

Pastel papers, I like Canson Mi-Tiante’s 350gms pastel paper, can be bought form Sue at £7 per full sheet or £3.50 half sheet. This paper can be bought from leading art supplies, I.e. SAA and Jackson’s etc.

Canvasses or boards for acrylic painting, 20 x16 or smaller are fine.

Sketchbook, approximately A5, for painting on locations.

Camera, if you have an iPad that can be useful. However, they are not essential.

Additional items – Charcoal and cartridge paper. Kitchen towels, putty rubber,

Water soluble pen, in sepia or black.

Permanent pen in Sepia or black.

2B and 4B pencils

Cloth for table

Water Pen

To finish, a bag to carry it all in!

If you like using an easel outdoor, please use a folding lightweight metal easel.

But not essential.
