They were all done as step by step paintings.

Polperro Harbour

Class on October 8

Stage 1

We drew the picture with a 2b pencil, and masked out the white areas with masking fluid

We mixed our colours, – Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine, Cobalt Turquoise, Cobalt Violet, Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow.

Note:  The pigment/colour ratio requires plenty of water. Always premix colours before starting

Stage2

We wet the paper with clean water and laid the washes over the paper using the colours seen in the original photograph. Left to dry.

Stage 3

We applied secondary washes, using the colours from the previous mix.

Applying wet pigment onto dry paper, and softening the edges where required.

Storm Approaching

Class on October 15

Seascape with 3 yachts and foreground rocks

Stage 1

We drew the picture with a 2b pencil, and masked out the white yacht sails and waves with masking fluid, flicking the fluid to make spray.

Stage 2

We mixed our colours, – Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine, Cobalt Turquoise, Cobalt Violet, Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow.

Stage 3

For the sky I mixed a dark Ultramarine with a little Cadmium red, using strong colour (More pigment and less water), plus a weaker mix of Cerulean Blue

I randomly wet the sky area with clean water, next I applied the Cerulean Blue at the top followed by the Ultramarine mix down to the horizon, left to dry.

We applied secondary washes, using the colours from the previous mix.

Applying wet pigment onto dry paper, and softening the edges where required.
This stage required us to think about the creation of the waves, smaller in the distance and larger as they come forward. For the larger waves I took the brush in the direction of the waves with a downwards motion.

Stage 5

We removed the masking fluid and finished with final darks colours

Bamburgh Castle in the Snow

Class on October 22nd

Step 1

We drew the picture with a 2b pencil.

Stage 2

We mixed our colours – Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, Cobalt Violet, Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna.

Stage 3

For the sky and foreground, we wet the paper and dropped in the Cadmium Yellow and Permanent Rose, followed by Cobalt blue and left to dry,

Stage 4

For the colours of the castle, we used a mix of Cadmium Yellow with Burnt Sienna, plus a mix of Ultramarine Blue with Permanent Rose. These colours were used in varying mixes. Warmer colours to right hand side of the castle and cooler mixes to the left side, we also left small areas of lights for ledges and windows

Stage 5

Using the same colours as stage 4, we placed a few more darks into the castle.

For the foreground snow areas we used Cobalt Turquoise and violet, leaving some of the white paper showing, here and there.

While still wet, we popped in a little purple mix with the Ultramarine Blue and Permanent Rose.
