What to Expect

  • Evening demonstrations in various subjects and media.
  • Daily exercises with one-to-one tuition.
  • Work in watercolour, acrylic, pastel, and mixed media.

Arrival Details

Please arrive at 3 PM on Monday and bring your materials to the Joseph Rowntree Art Room, where I’ll greet you.

Sample Itinerary

(A new itinerary will be provided before each course.)

  • Monday Evening: Watercolour painting – Turtle.
  • Tuesday: Watercolour exercise – Boys on the Beach.
    Tuesday Evening: Acrylic painting – Cockerel.
  • Wednesday: Acrylic painting – Peaky Blinders.
    Wednesday Evening: Acrylic with oil pastel – Castle.
  • Thursday: Collage – Flowers.

Additional Information

  • Students are responsible for their materials (not included in the course fee).
  • I’ll have watercolour and pastel paper available for purchase.
  • If you need me to bring a drawing board or easel, let me know in advance.
  • Handouts for each exercise will be provided.

Materials to Bring

Watercolour:

  • Quarter imperial paper (e.g., Saunders Waterford or Bockingford 600 GSM/300lb).
  • Watercolours (warm and cool primary colours):
    • Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue/Azure Blue, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow.
    • Additional colours: Yellow Ochre, Cobalt Violet, Burnt Sienna.
  • Brushes, masking fluid, kitchen towel, and a table covering.

Acrylic:

  • Similar colours to watercolours, plus a larger tube of System 3 White Acrylic.
  • Canvas or board (approx. 18×20 inches).
  • Brushes, mixing plate, and apron.

Collage:

  • Board, card, or canvas (approx. 18×20 inches).
  • PVA glue, old brush, and embellishments.

Acrylic & Oil Pastel:

  • A3 card, acrylics, and oil pastels (e.g., Sennelier).

A residentail centre providing refletion, recreation and relaxation, an impressive established building with modern extensions and prupose built annexe,

A non profit organisation jointly owned by two of the Joseph Rowntree trustees

They offer 63 en-suite bedrooms, (25 on the ground floor), beautifully tended grounds with tennis court, croquet lawn and children’s play area.

Ample free parking (suitable for minibuses and coaches)
